Plant description

Annual or biennial, more or less
foetid, 20-30 cm, single-stemmed, much branched above, glabrous or sparsely
covered with short spreading hairs. Basal leaves 2-3 x pinnate,
long-petiolate, forming a loose rosette or withering early. Caulline leaves
pinnate with narrow entire segments; upper segments narrow, oblong, sessile.
Fruiting pedicels slender, ascending, 2-4 mm. Siliculae ovate or broadly
elliptical, narrowly winged above, 2-2.5 x 1.5-2 mm; septum 1.5-2 x 0.5

Diffusion area

Waste places and by waysides,
generally by the sea and especially in E. Anglia. Europe, including Britain,
from Scandanavia south and east to the Mediterranean and southwest Asia.


Is found at the road edges, in
orchards, on meadows, steppes, more rarely on deforested lands. Common in the
entire country.

Therapeutic actions

Bug-infested weed has
antifebrific, diuretic, wound healing and insecticidal properties.

In folk medicine, herb broth bug-infested weed is used in malaria.

Sock bug-infested used to kill bugs (why there was a name plants).
Hypotensive;† in Skin disease.

The plant is used in the treatment of impetigo. An aqueous extract of the
herb causes a drop in blood pressure and depresses respiration.
