Plant description

Shrub with erect, simple or
weakly branched, reddish-brown stems up to 30-60 cm (in culture up to 1 m),
slightly downy white. Leaves from oblong-ovate to narrow-lanceolate, 5-7 cm
in length ( Cultural copies up to 12 cm), pointed, leathery, entire, glabrous
above, slightly pubescent below, on both sides of the green, sessile.

Flowers 5-8 cm in diameter, solitary, drooping, on top of the stem or
branches, purple or black-purple, the sepals among the 4, on the outer side
along the edges of densely pubescent.

Achenes with short stem,  5 mm, 4 mm
wide, flattened laterally, with a thickened rim and pinnately-pubescent beak
length to 5 cm, brownish-yellow or brown. 1 kg 125 000 seeds.

Flowering June - July. Fruiting in August - September.

Diffusion area

In nature, habitat type covers
Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia Minor, China. On the
territory of Russia is found in the European part of the North Caucasus and
in the Altai region.


Is found in steppe grasslands,
rocky slopes.

Therapeutic actions

less used in medicine, because it is toxic.

It is less studied. Used in rheumatism and diseases of the stomach,
syphilis, cancer diseases. Externally administered in fungal disease. Are
bactericide and anticonvulsants.

Biologically active substances

The plant contains alkaloids,
tannins, resins, cardenolides, saponins steroid, gamma-lactone, ranunkulin,
vitamin C. The fruit was found fatty oil 17,4%.
